By Ashima Arora

In 2015, I took a career break to explore the world with my husband, who was engaged in short-term projects across different countries. This enriching journey allowed me to acquire valuable skills like negotiation, budget management, and overcoming challenges by embracing new experiences.

After COVID, my husband’s international travel came to a halt, and I felt a strong desire to resume my professional career. Settling back in India, I pursued a B.Ed., gained hands-on teaching experience, and honed my ability to adapt and grow. Now, I am excited to return to the corporate world, reconnecting with my passion for analytics and ready to contribute with fresh perspectives and enhanced skills.

What motivated you to return to the workforce?

My strong zeal and passion for my professional role motivated me to return to the workforce. I’ve always had a deep connection with my profile, and the drive to continue contributing to this field kept me motivated during my break. The opportunity to grow, learn, and make meaningful contributions is what energizes me every day.

How has your career break influenced your perspective and work style?

My career break wasn't a break in the traditional sense. Each day, I was learning new skills—negotiating, planning, and connecting with people as I travelled and explored world. This time allowed me to systematically work on improving myself, turning my weaknesses into strengths. I came back more confident and adaptable to new challenges.

The break gave me a fresh perspective and a renewed ability to approach work with better planning, creativity, and patience, which has enhanced my work style since returning.

I chose dunnhumby because it's a leading global data science firm, and I felt a strong connection with the nature of the work. The company’s essence truly resonates with me, and I understand its mission deeply.

Being part of such an innovative environment, where I can both contribute and grow, made it the perfect place for me to restart my career and I knew it would provide the right environment for me to grow and succeed.

Any tips or advice for women considering a return or looking to grow?

My advice for women returning to the workforce is to have confidence in their abilities and always believe in themselves. A career break doesn't mean the end of opportunities; in fact, it's an opportunity to come back stronger. You’re now more mature, with a fresh perspective that can enhance your ability to handle tasks. Trust in your growth, embrace new challenges, and stay open to learning. Your unique experiences will be valuable assets in your career journey, so never underestimate the strength and wisdom you’ve gained along the way.
